  • B indicates the fire behaviour of the material (very little contribution to the fire)
  • s1 refers to smoke formation (very limited smoke production)
  • d0 indicates that the material does not produce flammable droplets

In public spaces and escape routes, materials of at least B-s1,d0 are usually required, while in residential buildings, materials of class D are often acceptable. High-pressure laminates can at best even reach class B, making them a suitable choice for many demanding applications.

How is the fire resistance of laminates tested?

The fire resistance of laminates is tested with several by standardised methods, which measure different characteristics. The most common test methods are the Single Burning Item (SBI) test and the small flame test, which measure the flammability, flame spread and heat generation of a material.

In the SBI test, a laminate board is exposed to an artificial fire source and its behaviour is monitored for 20 minutes. The test measures:

  • Heat release rate
  • Smoke extraction
  • Flame spread rate
  • Formation of flammable droplets

The results of these tests determine the final fire rating of the material. Laminates with a higher fire rating are suitable for use in areas where fire safety requirements are more stringent, such as escape routes, public spaces and high-rise buildings.

What factors affect the fire resistance of high pressure laminate?

How to choose the right laminate for the fire safety requirements of different spaces?

When choosing the right laminate, you need to take into account the space available. intended use and its fire safety requirements. In public buildings, such as schools, hospitals and hotels, the requirements are stricter than in residential buildings.

Exit routes and corridors require materials with the best possible fire resistance. For these spaces, we recommend at least B-s1,d0 rated laminates that do not contribute to fire spread and do not produce significant amounts of smoke.

In kitchens and other areas where there is a risk of fire, you should choose a laminate that is flame retardant. This is particularly important for surfaces that are close to heat sources.

  • Use of the space and location in the building
